Gisela Velez, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Velez is a board certified ophthalmologist and subspecialist in vitreoretinal surgery and inflammatory diseases of the eye. She has special training and interests in medical, laser, and surgical treatments of the retina and uveitis. Dr. Velez graduated from New York University School of Medicine in 1994 with both a Doctor of Medicine degree and Master's degree in Biomedical Ethics. She completed a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1994. After an internship in internal medicine at Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, she completed her residency in ophthalmology at Georgetown University in Washington, DC in 1998. From 1998 to 2000 she was a Senior Staff Fellow in Uveitis at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2003, she completed her fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary with the Retina Specialists of Boston. She has authored numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals including research on treatment for ocular inflammatory diseases, intraocular lymphoma, and novel drug delivery systems for the eye. Dr. Velez is actively involved in research in retinal diseases, and was awarded an NIH grant for physician scientists to continue her research into complications of retinal detachments. She is currently a Clinical Scientist at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. Dr. Velez is a member of the medical staff at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.
